The type of "liberal" who defends compulsory national service is as clueless of and as hostile to the moral mandate of liberty as is anyone. Social democrats who want to enslave the population and make the state everyone's master, even more than it is now — even after seeing the totalitarian inclinations of the current administration — are either impossibly naive or so uncomfortable with individual rights that it's hard to fathom why they don't embrace Republican fascism all the way. If they really want infinite social spending and total social slavery, they should stop calling themselves "liberals" and jump on the national socialist bandwagon all the way. If anything does bring about mandatory national service, it will be the political atmosphere of wartime. I don't see why any of them would oppose the war that is the health of the state they so love.
