Writes a friend from North Carolina: "Lew: Check out this letter I got from my brother today:
'Recently I was talking by phone with *****, who
is selling cars in Raleigh. He said he was giving his
sales pitch to a Wake Co. sheriff's deputy when the
conversation drifted to the prospective buyer's line
of work. The guy said that one of his most frequent
duties these days was to take shackled Army and Marine
deserters back to their respective bases. Both he and
***** remarked on how little publicized this rising tide
of AWOLs is. I know this is the first I've heard of
it. I have witnessed from day one the News and
Observer's blind support for this war. It appears that
this is just one more thing that they have chosen to
keep the public in the dark about in order to further
the war effort. If the news media had performed in
this manner during the Viet Nam War, we would still be there.'"
