Rethinking 'Just' War

Posted by Lew Rockwell at April 21, 2005 09:03 AM

Just as John Paul II helped us rethink the notion of politicians ritually killing people in what they call capital punishment, Benedict XVI may help us rethink mass killing and the perhaps too state-enabling just war theory. Here is what he had to say:

"There were not sufficient reasons to unleash a war against Iraq. To say nothing of the fact that, given the new weapons that make possible destructions that go beyond the combatant groups, today we should be asking ourselves if it is still licit to admit the very existence of a 'just war.'"
