The people making those assumptions of you are socialists themselves. You'd never convince them of this, because they don't recognize that their little jug-eared idol is a socialist as is his daddy. The republican party was the first socialist party to ever gain power in the US. It has never been a party devoted to free enterprise, free markets or to the founding principles of this country. It is still a socialist party and always has been, despite the fact that it's promoted as an alternative to the socialist (or Marxist)democrat party. The main difference between the two parties is that the democrats were not originally socialist but the republicans always have been.This fellow has done some interesting writing on the subject of Lincoln's socialist supporters and of Lincoln's own socialist leanings.
Al Benson has been writing columns for a few obscure outlets for several years and his research is pretty interesting.
