More on Libertarians leaving the GOP

Posted by Norman Singleton at November 17, 2003 09:46 PM

This piece from the American Prospect examines why some DC-libertarians are considering abandoning the GOP. Note that most of the opposition is because of Bush's domestic socialism and war mongering. Even when a writer for Reason takes up the anti-GOP cause it is because of war and spending. The "how can you say Bibles are better than porn" crowd does not have much interest in dumping Bush, since most of them are pro-war "supply siders" (e.g. comfortable with a large state as long a marginal rates are low.) BTW-- I doubt Goldberg thought to ask Virginia Postrel if she would prefer living across the street to a porn shop or a Church? Most sane people would prefer a Church but one never knows with Ms. Dynamism.

Support for the largest expansion of the welfare state since the Great Society is not going to win Bush any fans among libertarians and small government conservatives. Perhaps Karl Rove should worry about the eroding GOP base and Perle should start saving for a rainy day.
