Stephen "To my last breath I will defend Trotsky" Schwartz joins David Horowitz, Andrew Sullivan, Ronald Radosh, and a host of other neoconservatives in denouncing Ann Coulter for her defense of Tailgunner Joe.
Horowitz, Radosh, and Sullivan all defend the democrats by invoking such staunch "anti-Communists" like Harry Truman, Scoop Jackson, and Hubert Humphrey. Schwartz attacks McCarthy and Coulter by invoking the names of a bunch of obscure Spanish communists and anarchists, and Trotskyites. These people, according to Schwartz, were on the frontlines fighting the Communists, and the cold hearted Coulter and McCarthy could care less about them. Furthermore, Schartz accuses McCarthy of undermining "the combat against Stalinist influence undertaken in America by ex-Communists, social-democrats, anti-Communist labor leaders, and, yes, liberals."
To Schwartz the heroes against Communism (or should I say "Stalinism") are not genuine anti-Communists like Joe McCarthy, Martin Dies, and Fransisco Franco, but various Trotskyites, Labor Leaders, Social Democrats, and other enemies of the Right who have absolutely no real opposition to Communism except that their little faction got kicked out by Stalin. Trotsky and the Spanish Republicans were just as brutal as Stalin when they were in power, and there is no reason why Joe McCarthy wouldn't want them in the government anymore than he would want Stalinists.
Frankly, I think Schwartz is a blessing in disguise. Whenever we hear the neocons claim how they have shed their Leftist past, we can simply point to the man who said "To my last breath I will defend the Trotsky who alone, and pursued from country to country, and finally laid low in his own blood in a hideously hot little house in Mexico City, said no to Soviet coddling of Hitlerism, to the Moscow purges, and to the betrayal of the Spanish Republic, and who had the capacity to admit he had been wrong about the imposition of a single-party state, as well as about the fate of the Jewish people. To my last breath, and without apology. Let the neofascists, and Stalinists in their second childhood, make of it what they will."
